Pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (P5P) is the active coenzyme form of vitamin B6 and one of the primary forms the body uses to support a wide range of metabolic functions.
P5P serves as a cofactor for more than 100 enzyme reactions throughout the body. It plays an important role in the production of neurotransmitters and works alongside folate and vitamin B12 in homocysteine metabolism and healthy red blood cell formation.
P5P is also involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It helps support energy production by assisting with the release of stored glycogen from the liver and muscles so it can be used as fuel.
In addition, P5P contributes to normal nervous system and musculoskeletal function and supports healthy fluid and electrolyte balance, including the regulation of sodium and potassium.
Because of its broad role in enzyme activity, neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism, red blood cell formation, and nervous system health, P5P is an important form of vitamin B6 for overall metabolic and neurological support.
