Betaine Plus Supplies Pepsin and Betaine
DESCRIPTION
Betaine Plus, provided by Douglas Laboratories, supplies 650 mg of Betaine HCl and 140 mg of Pepsin in each easy to swallow capsule.
FUNCTIONS
The breakdown of dietary protein begins in the stomach where gastric hydrochloric acid (HCl) assumes an important role in protein digestion and other processes. Hydrochloric acid acts as a catalyst in the activation of pepsin from pepsinogen.
A key function of HCl is to help in digestion of proteins. HCl does so by maintaining an optimum pH level in the stomach. The pH levels of the stomach vary in the range of 1-2 up to 4-5.
A high protein meal may cause the stomach pH levels to drop to as low as 1.
HCl creates an optimum acidic environment to convert pepsinogen, an inactive stomach enzyme, into active pepsin enzyme. Pepsin is a powerful enzyme, which is used for digestion of proteins. If the body doesn’t produce enough HCl, digestion of protein becomes difficult.
HCl is also plays an important role in 3 main areas
- Helps In Digestion Of Proteins
- Destroys Microorganisms
- Helps In Absorption Of Vitamin B12, Iron, any many minerals
